Andhra Pradesh CM Meets Union Jal Shakti Minister on Key Water Projects

During his Delhi visit, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu met Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil to seek approvals and financial assistance for several critical irrigation and drinking water projects in the state. The Chief Minister highlighted that these projects are vital for farmers’ livelihoods, regional development, and long-term water security. He also discussed pending issues related to central funding and emphasized the need for timely decisions to ensure uninterrupted progress of key infrastructure initiatives.

The Chief Minister specifically urged the permanent withdrawal of the stop-work order on the Polavaram project, citing implementation hurdles caused by delays. He requested reimbursement of increased costs due to enhanced canal capacities and financial support for Phase II of the project, which includes land acquisition, rehabilitation, and protective embankments, requiring additional funding of about ₹32,000 crore. Proposals for the Polavaram–Nallamala Sagar link project were also presented under the national river interlinking framework. In addition, Naidu called for early resolution of inter-state water disputes, including the publication of the Vamsadhara Tribunal’s final report, formation of a Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal for Andhra Pradesh–Telangana issues, and expressed concerns over the proposed height increase of the Almatti dam, warning of its impact on downstream water availability for Andhra Pradesh.
